A
veteran dancer and choreographer of more than 30 years of experience,
Yaa Obeng Whitmore was one of the
country’s top performers. Throughout her career, Whitmore
has successfully performed on some of the world's largest stages
that include the Centennial Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Georgia.
She has also been a member of several NBA dance teams and appeared
in a variety of music videos and television specials with some
of the nation's top musical and award winning artists.
Whitmore began her professional dance
career with the Atlanta Eagles of the United States Basketball
League. After just one season with the Eagles, she took her
first leap into the NBA, joining the Atlanta Hawks dance team.
Several years later she moved to New York, where her talents
led her to three different teams in the metropolitan area, including
the New York City Hawks (AFL), New York Liberty (WNBA) and three
stints with the New York Knicks (NBA). Whitmore
also spent one season with the Philadelphia 76ers dance team.
In March 2010, she performed with the 76ers dance team, for
a reunion game. |
Outside
of the sports arena, Whitmore toured
Germany with national recording artist “Ginuwine”
while also appearing in three different television specials
that included MTV's Road Rules and The Brain, and NBC's Showtime
at the Apollo. She also appeared in Grammy Award winning and
Columbia Records artists Will Smith's music video.
Whitmore held the NBA position of
Entertainment Groups Manager for Bobcats Sports and Entertainment
LLC. In that inaugural role, she was responsible for auditioning
and managing the talent of several cheerleaders, dancers, the
mascot and performing team members. This included their overall
look, performance execution, budgets and payroll. She also coordinated
all internal promotions within the organization and external
promotions in the community. In addition to arranging all aspects
of scheduling choreography, while assisting with guest choreographers.
The list of performing teams included the Bobcats Dance Team,
Rally Cats (Cheerleading Squad), Phat Cats (Male Dance Team)
and the Bobcats/Sting youth dance team.

In
2006 Whitmore founded, Your Own Way
Consulting, LLC, which specializes in providing creative solutions
for the performing teams in the sports and entertainment industry.
Your Own Way Consulting, LLC offers performing groups the fundamental
skills and training needed to perform and excel in the sports
industry. In 2007 Whitmore wrote the
introspective book “The Life of an NBA Dancer, Truths
Not Seen on the Court”. This book teaches a variety of
skills needed for aspiring rookie and veteran performers in
the sports industry.

native of Monrovia, Liberia and Ghana, West Africa, Whitmore
attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. with a concentration
in Journalism. She also focused on a double minor in Business
Administration and Dance Education. |
